The Scarlet Empress (1934)

The Scarlet Empress (Josef von Sternberg, 1934), with Marlene Dietrich, John Lodge, Sam Jaffe.

This is supposed to be an American historical drama about the life of Catherine the Great. Not sure on all the historical part, what I want to know is

So who are these guys with the HUGE hands I saw in these still pictures ..

Well apparently they are gargoyles created for the movie to help induce the feeling of oppressiveness.   Here I was thinking the movie was a monster, horror, or alien spook show.  Interesting show, those gargoyles are the best part, amazing work
